Thyroglossal duct cysts: experience from a series of cases treated in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic of General Hospital “G.Papanikolaou’’ in Thessaloniki, Greece

SUMMARY: Thyroglossal duct cyst is the most common swelling of fetal origin in cervix, located predominantly frontal neck area. The prevalence disease 7%, while bibliography there some controversy regarding age diagnosis, since authors find greater occurrence children and others adults.[1-3] Clinically, it usually appears as a mobile, painless mass without tension commonly below hyoid bone (75% patients), but if inflammated, can be accompanied by pain. indicated therapeutic approach thyroglossal cysts surgical removal under general anesthesia according to Sistrunk technique, that ensures full cyst’s wall including part body with which attached. aim present study was written based on SCARE 2020 protocol EQUATOR[4] presentation series 5 cases were surgically treated University Clinic Oral Maxillofacial Surgery G.Papanikolaou General Hospital 2.5 years time frame(9/2019-2/2022). Four patients men(80%) (mean 50.5 years, ranging from 36 71 old) one 63 year old woman(20%). All presented outpatient unit clinic mobile mass, appeared euthyroid laboratory tests. underwent at same (Sistrunk procedure). No regression noticed frequent postoperative follow-up. In conclusion, clinically evident entity although more often diagnosed childhood, also appear adults. It may complicated inflammation painful swelling. treatment choice procedure.
